About Us.

Cooper Stott Solicitors is a Durham based law firm situated in Aykley Heads, just outside of Durham City. We have a large free car park at our office and disabled access.

Where are we now

We are proud to have served our community and beyond since we were formed in 1987.  The firm has evolved over the years, but our ethos has remained the same: we put our clients at the heart of everything we do.

We listen carefully to our clients' objectives and have the experience and expertise to enable us to meet them.

We are proud to be members of the Law Society’s Family Law Advanced Panel, Children Panel and Conveyancing Quality Scheme.

Alison Stott Solicitors

Cooper Stott Solicitors was formed in 1987, then known as Alison Stott Solicitors and based on Elvet Bridge. Alison Stott Solicitors began as a sole practitioner general practice handling a range of legal work including family law, conveyancing, wills and probate and crime.

Before too long, Alison Stott Solicitors outgrew their Elvet Bridge office and relocated to Reform Place on North Road. The practice was expanding rapidly and new support staff were employed along with a second solicitor, Kathryn Cooper, who remains a consultant to this day.

On The Move

In 1995 Alison Stott Solicitors was on the move again and relocated to our current office in Aykley Heads.

An imposing stone building, Aykley Vale Chambers was the former head office of the electricity board in Durham and sits prominently on Durham Road between Framwellgate Moor and Durham City.  In 2000 Alison Stott retired and with new partner Nigel Cooper on board, the name was changed to reflect the practice’s current identity while retaining a link to its foundation.

The Next Generation

Many of our current staff joined us at the turn of the Millennium including experienced conveyancing executive Kathryn Griffiths who has since helped thousands of clients move home - many of them more than once!

With a rapidly expanding family practice, current director Angela McGurk joined the firm in 2005 as a trainee solicitor and now heads up the department.

Our other director James Cooper arrived in 2008 and advises on all property matters and retains a particular interest in private client work. Assistant solicitor Katie Cooper joined in 2019 from a TopTwenty UK Law Firm to join the family business and specializes in complex property transactions.
